Rock Piles on our Farm in Okanogan Highlands near Oroville and Tonasket, Washington

Rocks must be removed from fields as they cause costly damage to equipment.  Rock piles are also very interesting as they are a show case of the alluvial deposits left from our recent ice age. Our ranch and resort are in the Okanogan Highlands near Oroville and Tonasket, Washington and we also have large granite features in our landscape.

Interesting rock pile in fall color in Okanogan HighlandsIt is one stop shopping for rock hounds to find many colors and types of rocks.  The rock piles also create habitat for rodents ranging from mice to yellow bellied marmots (we locally refer to as ground hogs).

The rock piles are also great hawk watching locations as the hawks frequently use them as perches. We find owl pellets and a few remains of bird meals upon close investigation.  In our culture rock piles are something we grew up with and they are part of our landscape.  Rocks are interesting and like art, each person sees something different.
